I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong.

Having been a dispatcher in another area I can tell you one thing that would really help a dispatcher.
1. All patrol calls ( tags, drivers license)should be done by the police officer, not called into a dispatcher. All cars should be equipped with laptops)
2. there should be a 911 CALL TAKER ONLY!!!!This person should not have to dispatch anything!!!!! ( I cannot imagine what all this dispatcher had going on while she was on this call).
Im sure she was putting the caller on hold to
A- dispatch
B- keep up with her officers and other persons
C. keep up with their mileage
and so forth, you get the picture?
John Q Public has NO IDEA what a disptacher actually does!!! I thought you answered 911 calls, but no, the dispatcher is actually there to keep up with police officers, sherrifs, ambulances and so forth.
Im going to give you a typical day for a dispatcher.
You are required to answer 911 calls, then you will have 3 or more departments that you have to keep up with. Typically this could be the Sherrifs ( all 8 or 9 of them)
Floyd County Police ( all 8 or 10 of them)
and at least one fire dept ( all 7 or 8 of them). All of this is your responsibility.
Also, you must keep up with ALL OF THESE PEOPLE!!!!! You dispatch them, then they will tell you they are enroute, then you mark that down, then they will tell you they are on the scene ( you also have to mark that down and also most of them ( esp. the ambulance tells you their milegae, like you dont have enough to keep up with!!!!!!
Believe it or not, you must ALWAYS know where you officer is, even if he is just out to eat!!!!!!! ( thats a 10-84)
If you ask me, that is just too much information for one person to deal with!!!!! Its also very important to keep up with the officers because if something goes wrong, thats the first thing you have to know!!!! ( where to send help to them)
I really feel sorry for this dispatcher, I know that she is overworked, but I must say even a rookie would know to send an officer out to where the caller is. Better safe than sorry.

MissyMiss, I must admit that sounds pretty stressful. It's a wonder some days a person's nerves isn't a wreck dealing with all that at once.

Luckily the general assembly recognized these problems at one time in the past and shielded dispatchers, the 911 center and the government from any liability......................EVEN in cases of gross negligence.........in order to successfully sue 911 you must prove bad faith, evil intent or malice..........

Never knew that. I don't agree with the gross negligence part. That is a little too much back scratching in my opinion.

JJ it is frustrating for the family I'm sure...................all public safety have similar protections to varying degrees................the theory is that if a dispatcher knows that any mistake, bad judgment or misguided decision could lead to a loss of all their property that they will stop acting and making decisions at all.....when the state was pushing 911 systems for all jurisdictions this protection from liabilty was one of the ways to convince towns to do it............... There are numerous court cases in georgia that say 911 has no duty to dispatch and LE has no duty to respond to a call for help..................google City of Rome v Jordan......read what happened and the courts decision................

I agree that the dispatchers, EMT's, Firemen, LE or any others that might be involved in any type of resonse to assist need protection from frivolous lawsuits. It is just hard to imagine that gross negilence would be covered.
And the "no duty to respond" is news to me also. Yoou just never know do you.....

So now my question is, is there or has there been a case of "special relationship"? I am not real sure what that means. Also, thanks for the link....very interesting information.

item #4 in the Notes section at the end mentions/explains it:
4. Since the situation is not presented by the facts of this case, we do not determine whether a special duty may exist even in the absence of a special relationship where a police officer is present at the scene of a crime, has the knowledge and the resources to act to the benefit of the injured party, yet does not act.
I'm curious as to what had happened to this Jordon person, guess I'll start looking.....

Here's one to add to the books:
http://www.wsbtv.com/video/22397365/index.html?source=CNN
The wrong video comes up but scroll down and click on the story about the four Dekalb County Firefighters who were fired after a lady called them and told them she had set her oxygen tank on fire. They went by but saw no smoke so they didn't get out and investigate. 5 hours later, 9 neighbors called the report of the fire in. The lady died in the fire.
