KristyE, if checking a text message was OK for you to do, it would have to be OK for everyone else to do. Next thing you know there are 25 people sending and checking text messages, and the light from a phone IS quite distracting to others trying to watch a movie. Maybe next time you go to the movies you should try the 411 Drive-In Theatre just outside Centre, AL. if you're offended by being expected to be courteous to the other people that paid way too much to go to a movie.

I agree there should be some common courtesy when it comes to cell phones. Instead of checking the phone in theatre, Simply go to the restroom.
Alot of places now are getting strict on the usage of a cellphone. I know of one Dr's office that has a sign before you come in the door and a sign at the check in window that reads: Turn off all cellphones. If you get caught using the cellphone or it goes off then your appointment will be cancelled and you will not be seen!

Lumbee, most folks with common sense agree with you and follow the rules voluntarily. However, there is a small minority of folks who think they are above everyone else and that rules don't apply to them. They think that their children's safety or their personal inconvenience is more important than the rest of us mere mortals. This is why the business must enforce the rules for the enjoyment of the other patrons.

KristyE wrote: I attended the 7:30 showing of "Wolfman" at Rome Cinemas with my father, brother and husband on 2/20/2010. Between tickets and concessions, the four of us spent over $60.00. Before the movie began, movie theatre staff (2 men) asked that attendees turn off their cell phones. I had already turned my cell phone to vibrate, as had the rest of our party attending the movie. During the movie, the same 2 men peridically patroled the theatre. It was very distracting to see them consistently walking along the outer wall looking at the crowd. Halfway through the movie, I received a text message. I held my phone in my lap, checked to make sure it wasn't job-related or child-related (as my mother was taking care of my son) and turned my phone back over. I did not respond to the text, open my phone, or make a call. I merely took 2 seconds to "check and ignore." After I had put my phone back down and went back to the movie, one of the men came over to me and requested that I turn my cell phone off. I said "ok" and no further incident took place. However, for the rest of the movie, the same 2 men continued to patrol, stand and watch, and patrol some more.
After the movie was over, we addressed our dissatisfaction with a manager and explained why I was unable to turn my cell phone "off". She proceeded to argue with us openly in front of other patrons in the lobby. We were told that the "rules were the rules." When told that we would no longer be attending her theatre, she made it very clear that she didn't care.
I understand that the use of cell phones during a movie is distracting. I consider myself to have good cell phone etiquette - and agree with the "turn all ringers off" rule when attending a movie. I do not agree with the request to "turn cell phones OFF" - especially as a mother and as a person that is on-call. I feel like the constant "patrol" of the theatre was extremely distracting and nerve-racking. The staff person walking through the aisles, coming to my seat, bending down in my face and asking me to turn my phone off after I had already put it down was much more distracting than the 2 seconds I took to check to make sure that there wasn't an emergency.
I am wondering if other people who have small children or whose jobs require them to be on-call have had similar experiences at this theatre. I wonder if they chose to attend another theatre as we have, if Rome Cinemas would care then?
The manager should have took you to her office to discuss this matter. Argueing openly in the lobby in front of other patrons isn't good for business nor is very professional.. (IMO)

Glad to hear they are doing this!! There is nothing more infuriating than trying to watch (much less hear) a movie you paid for, and rude ppl texting, etc..
It's bad enough with the ones that talk and make annoying noises!

Other than cell phones going off or texting, IMO- Crying babies annoy me. No offense to anyone, I had babies one point in my life but I never took them to the movies until they were at least 2 or 3 in age. I understand babies have just as much right there. It's ok as long as the parent takes the baby out if they began to cry. It's all about common courtesy and respect for others..

MIB, you may have forgotten to hit send, I have done that many times. You know, it's that memory thing with us old folks (at least in my case) . I haven't deleted any post in a while.

I have not been to the theater enough in the past few years to know if the light from a cell phone would bother me or not. What does bother me is those people who pull out in front of me in traffic, not really leaving enough room between their car and mine (thank goodness for good brakes) and then I see that they are on their cell phone and only looking out of the corner of their eye at what they are doing.
If you are on the cell phone, please park and carry on your conversation. Unless you are in an emergency situation and are rushing to the hospital to save a dying child, and have all your lights flashing, stay out of traffic or stay off the cell phone!

KristyE,
I just wanted to say welcome to the forum. Don't feel like you are being harrassed here too. You tossed one out there and people responded. Your first one just happens to be one that most of us take the other side on.
So, please, debate your point if you like, but don't get discouraged. I am sure that there will be many times that you will have a popular opinion and some not so popular.
Jesse

Nicely said, jesse. Being on call is no fun anyway, you have to be ready to quit what ever you are doing to take care of what ever the problem is. My husband was on call much of the time and usually the "call" came just as we were sitting down to dinner or getting ready for bed.
Years ago, we didn't have the cell phones or even beepers so if anyone wanted to get in touch with us and we were not at home or work, they had to wait until we were at a phone number they could reach to tell us what was going on.
We, as a society, have become so accustomed to instant gratification that it has become a part of our daily lives as much as the automobile in our driveway. Instant coffee, instant (frozen, already cooked and microwavable) foods, computers, cell phones, etc.
Times have changed, most people no longer make their own bread, cook oatmeal from rolled oats, actually peel and cook the potato's for hashbrowns, iron our clothes, etc. The world has become much faster paced and it is either keep up or be left in the dust.
