I visited the fair with my younger sister and her friend this past Tuesday night, the opening evening of the fair. Upon entering, we visited some of the exhibits and then progressed to the rides. As we neared the rides, we noticed a tent with a large sign proclaiming the exhibition of "The World's Tiniest Woman". I was stuck with curiosity and paid the dollar fee to enter the tent. I can't remember exactly what it was I was expecting to see as I entered, but it was nothing like I encountered. Sitting atop a table surrounded by four foot high plywood walls was an female dwarf of older age. The temperature in this tent was very high and this woman did not appear to have a drink or anything else to keep her cool. Her working conditions were absolutely deplorable. Not only was she in a hot tent with fair goers lining up to walk by and stare at her, she was not even provided with a chair to sit in. When I looked into her eyes, I saw naught but sadness. Why, in 2009, do we (a) have an insensitive and distasteful exhibit on dwarfism and (b) have somebody working in these heinous conditions. It is absolutely repulsive. I have contacted a friend who will attempt to get some pictures of this human neglect so something can be done to put an end to this. Please, if you visit the fair, express your concern about this 'freak-show'.

Scanning the faces of others who visited the tent, I know I am not alone in my opinion of this attraction. People know this is not right, people know something needs to be done.

Have any of you seen this attraction? What do you feel about it?

I felt the same way.  I was so very shocked when I walked around the corner and there was an actual human being sitting there.  I was really expecting it to be something cartoonish.  Never did I imagine that there would be a real person there.  My 7 year old read the sign and wanted to go in.  Had I known what it really was, we wouldn't have gone in.  I was so embarrassed that we were gaping at this poor woman.  We talked with her and told her thank you.  She showed pictures of her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren in Jamaica.  I agree, how in this day and age, can something like this go on?  But I did notice that she had her cell phone plugged in next to her so I don't think she's there against her will.  But I'm sure her circumstances dictate what she can and can't do about it.  It was just so sad!

I did not notice the cell phone. I was so surprised to see a real person sitting there that I stared blankly at her for a few moments before beginning to sense the surrounding. I plan on calling Wade Shows (734-266-1668) tomorrow to inquire on her working conditions since there is absolutely no record of her on the web site. Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm finding on Facebook that many people felt the same way that we did.

IMO,  If she is there against her will then that is wrong!  But if she is there on her own will then she choses to work in such environment.  It is sad if she choses to work that way.  I guess she feels like it's a way to make money.  Which I seriously doubt she is held there against her will..

I don't think she is held their against her will, but it is obvious that he working conditions need improvement. But in the first place, should we use people with dwarfism as a form of entertainment?

I agree we shouldn't use them for entertainment.   I just wish this lady didn't have to work this way..

OMG! I hate to say this, but I have got to go see her now! How bad it must be that she has to do this to earn a living! If she is that small, then you know that the workforce would not have a place for her, and this may be that only thing that she can do. I am going to support her not stare. It must be very hard to be a side show at a fair. I was shocked when I saw that tent Tues.

The Exchange Club needs to exercise its role and good sense and order the exhibit shut down. There are certain things that should not be done in the interest of human decency.

Maybe someone should ask her for her opinion. She might have asked for the job........she may prefer being gawked at over government handouts or starving.
I understand it is deplorable, but I do wonder what she has to say about it before we rescue her.

I have been going to the coosa valley fair for many years and it gets progressively worse each year. You know it is great to provide the children with rides and fun things to do. But we adults are then standing around with next to nothing to do. Looking at an unfortunate person who is x-tra small or the same thing with a pony is not my idea of entertainment. One of the few things that I personally enjoyed as a father and grandfather was playing the games that produced a nice Teddy Bear for the children. It kept me busy and made the kids more than happy. Games such as the Mouse Game, and throwing the ball int the round colored circle were fun and usually produced a prize without trying to throw a one inch circle around a two inch coke bottle. All the games are set up for no winners, unless they have a crowd, then they will give one to keep the crowd around. Some people will say gambling, well what do they think the lottery is. Why? has the Fair association year by year cut down on these activities that will keep an adult around long enough for the children to spend more money. Not good business to my way of thinking. I went Tues. night gave the grandchildren some money walked thru once and said Well Hell, not a thing that intersts me. And yes before you all come down on me I know that the fair is for the children, but that is not completely true. It is for the Exchange Club (I support them) and the Carny people to make money. Keep cutting it back and I for one will take my kids to the Cobb County fair or somewhere that the old fogies haven't taken all the fun out. If it was good enough in the 50's, 60's thru the 90's it ought to be good now. My opinion

 my thought too....

and I would imagine that there are concerned people every place that she goes to and has had a welfare check (not the $ type) before.
