CCH (formerly Universal Tax) announced yesterday they are leaving Rome and moving their office to Kennesaw. Some employees are commenting on the "other" news site and I guess they need to vent.
I've been commuting for more than 20 years to a location alot further than Kennesaw. You learn to adapt to the commute. If you like your job, you will go with it and soon you will realize it is not a big deal.
I would be thankful that the company is offering to let me keep my job. In this economy, be thankful that you have a job where ever it may be, alot of people don't have one.
Good luck to you all and I'll see you on the road! Oh yeah, gasoline is almost always cheaper in Cartersville and in Acworth. I never fill up in Rome.

Dh commuted for years to Marietta until he retired. Lots of people actually do commute to that area. That doesn't change the frustration, but at least they are in commute range compared to the other states (Florida and Maine!)that are effected.
The commute is a good time to listen to audio books!Last edited on Fri Feb 26th, 2010 01:53 am by beckymc

I had someone almost run me off the interstate in Acworth the other day because they were texting. Weaving all over the place. Didn't phase her a bit when I blew the horn to let her know she was about to sideswipe me. She just kept at it.
I haven't tried books on tape. Would probably be relaxing. I listen to a lot of music. I did tape a couple of college lectures to listen to and would tape my exam reviews and listen to them during the commute to help study.

There is no way to put a positive spin on commuting--and this is from someone who made that drive to and from Atlanta on a daily basis for several years. If you work the schedule most people are required to work, you drive to Cobb County when I-75 southbound is heaviest and leave work at the worst time for I-75 northbound traffic. That turns a 50 to 60 minute one way drive into a 2 hour drive on some days. As my dad said about people commuting long distances, that turns a 50 hour a week job into a 70 to 90 hour a week job and so effectively reduces your pay. These employees (and almost all of us know people who work there) now will be deprived of the opportunity to get their children off to school, watch their children play baseball, softball and football, attend Wednesday night supper at church with their children, or otherwise fully participate in the lives of their families. They are being forced to do this because this international company made up its mind it wanted to be in the Atlanta area because a smaller city like Rome was beneath its arrogance. Steve Safigan and his partners picked Rome for a reason. Rome and the employees from Rome built Universal Tax Service into the industry giant it has become. This is how a company repays its workers and the community that did everything this company ever asked them to do. For those of you who think commuting is good, live in your dream world. The rest of us prefer reality. Last edited on Fri Feb 26th, 2010 11:00 am by TheSeer

While I agree with you Seer, as for most business, the bottom line is to make money for the stockholders and the CEO's. Inconvience to employees is immaterial to these companies.

Sorry, Seer.. I disagree.. the company pays it's employees. That IS their compensation for the job they do. The company doesn't owe the employees anything; anymore than the employee, offered a better position elsewhere, would feel some obligation to "the company" to stay.
No one said commuting was easy. Some of us that have done it make an effort to make use of the commute time in a positive way. It sure beats being unemployed.

I live in that area and Go to Church not far from the Kennesaw location of CCH. The only bad part of that commute will be getting off I-75 at Chastain Road and traveling down Chastain Road toward 575. The morning slow down on I-75 South usually doesnt begin until after you get to the I-75/575 merge.
If you dont like that route, then take Hwy 20 to Canton and take 575 South to Chastian Rd. Which is a slower route because of the Cherokee County commute down 575.

The Main thing I have not read in this thread is: Rome and Floyd County lose again!!!!Another Company that employs many people and supports many families has decided to move to another location. When the Atlanta area for whatever reason becomes a more attractive location for a business than Rome and Floyd county then we are surely in trouble. Those of you who follow your jobs are very lucky to keep them and the commute is not your fault, not the company's fault, It is the fault of our local government who continue to make things harder for business rather than making an effort to keep them here in Floyd County.

My husband will be making this commute for his job at CCH. He has made the trip many days before to do IT work at the current Kennesaw office. He says the drive is not bad, only taking him about an hour in the morning and afternoon. We live in Rome, a little under 10 miles from the current office. With interstate access in Cartersville and Adairsville both easily accessible to our home, he will have no problem going back and forth. For a company the size of CCH, in this economy, moving to a new location and not cutting any employees is a miracle in itself. Many companies are cutting employees or at least having furlough days while staying in the same location. There are two sides that you can look at everything, and while I hate it for the Rome community that we are losing another big employer, there are many things that I feel Rome lacks when it comes to retaining businesses, especially the larger ones.

Common sense being number one in my opinion.
