They don't seem to care about the businesses that are leaving and the many, many empty shopping centers we have around town. They only care about artificial turf and tennis courts...... hello.......
I know of an area in Garden Lakes that was promised a new water line 20 years ago, but they stopped just before this certain street to go work down Horseleg I believe.

Then perhaps it's time those people who were promised a new water line had a meeting with the County Commission and asked a few pertinent questions. It's time to put them on the spot and demand answers.

i agree.. perhaps it will draw the revenues to rome, such as hotel, restaurant, and some light tourist dollars, and it will mean less waiting for the local teams who do tennis. but it sure is amazing how money just springs up for projects like this..while money for street repair seem to be unavailiable. try driving in soutwest floyd county, like on melson road, or even blacks bluff road and see how bad our roads are.. and some of rome surface streets... yep...the tennis court will bring people to our community, and they will love rome..(as long as they dont travel too far from the beaten track) because they will fall neck first into a pot-hole......

It is skipped around regularly but in case you forgot, pet projects always trump basic necessities and ALWAYS include a "it'll bring in revenues" tag line..................we deserve what we get

I personally will not settle for "We deserve what we get" We probably deserve it but it just sticks in my craw. Why does City/County continue to let a bunch of two-bit politicians take our money and spend it anyway they like. This project will bring in some revenue on the short term but will take years to pay for, if ever. No sense to it, none whatsoever. Strictly for the County Club Crowd. AS to Hotels we have over 5 times the capacity needed right now today. The Indians build them as fast as they can get the money from the Federal Govt. They spend half of their loans on the land and Hotel and send the rest back to India. Most loans are interest free because they are here on visas. Now just to be sure you know who I am talking about It is "The Indians with a Dot not a Feather" People from India not Native Americans. My Opinion

Gwinnett Acquires Stone Mountain Tennis Center
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
LAWRENCEVILLE - An Olympic venue will become a county park.
Commissioners agreed Tuesday to operate the Stone Mountain Tennis Center, though the center’s 8,000-seat stadium will be demolished before the county takes over the location.
“That’s the gateway to our county along (U.S. Highway) 78,” Commissioner Mike Beaudreau said. “It’s a really good thing.”
For a decade after the Olympics, the Stone Mountain Memorial Association attempted to bring success to the center, but after a $1.5 million loss on a tournament in 1997 and annual losses of $200,000, it was padlocked two years ago.
Recently, officials attempted to market the stadium as a potential concert venue, but Curtis Branscome, CEO of the association, said there were no takers.
“We just couldn’t make it work, so we wanted to get some use out of it,” Branscome said. “I would rather it be successful and useful and functional.”
Built for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the stadium had water leakage problems and had a high cost to maintain, Branscome said.
The 15 tennis courts, though, are in good shape, and Branscome said the county parks department, which has experience in running tennis facilities, will be better suited to managing the center.
Commissioners engaged in a 50-year lease with the association, at a cost of $1 a year. Branscome said the 24.5 acres must remain a recreational venue, but the association has approval rights for any further development of a park.
Phil Hoskins, director of Gwinnett’s community services department, said the county will take over the tennis center on Jan. 1, but it would likely open to the public in mid-2010.
Great idea Floyd County...so lets see ...this venue which is located closely to Hwy 78, I-285 and I-85 in an extremely populated area couldn't make this work yet you are going to make it work in Floyd County which has no quick access to an interstate, doesn't have the quality support facilities and the money is not readily available to build the facility.
Underpaid public safety officers, county employee furloughs, but they have the ability to get money for this?
Wake up Floyd County....you're being ripped off by your commission.

Sounds like your county commission is brain dead... You need jobs for folks with families to feed, not for college students to chase tennis balls so they can buy more pizza and beer...

Tex, It looks like it's time to bring out the tar and feathers, the pitchforks and the torch's. Until the tax paying voters in this county take a stand against the waste and make the commisioners accountable, nothing will change.

This is a very stinkable project. Repeatedly, and in every available medium -- newspaper, commission meetings, internet, friends -- ask this question: Where in the US, in GA, in Floyd County, EVER, has a taxpayer-funded athletics complex EVER IN HISTORY either paid for itself or created more than a handful of permanent jobs? EVER? Show me one. It's true that, if they're very well built (Stonehenge, The Pyramids, The Roman Colusseum) they sometimes bring tourist dollars long after the people whose money and blood built them are dead; otherwise, WHERE? Ask the people of Gwinnett, or of the pro stadiums vacated by teams who move to other cities, or any city that's hosted the Olympics. Where, when, has it worked? Show us.

Does anyone really believe that Roger Federer or Venus Williams is going to Rome, Georgia to play a tennis tournament?

Seems the issue with Stone Mountain may be more an issue of mismanagement and political infighting with no sense of direction. That would be a financial loss for any business.
<quote>
Mr. Branscome has stated that the facility has cost SMMA hundreds of thousands of dollars but no evidence of this has been brought forward and looking at the facility through a locked fence, would lend one to believe that very little has been spent. It was stated that SMMA has worked for years to find an alternative use which is again documentation of this has yet to be seen. No study has been done on the feasibility of putting a roof on the Stadium and using it for a multipurpose facility and with Mr. Branscome position of not talking to anyone unless they are a well established and well capitalized organization (at least $50 million in assets) is unreasonable.

Earlier this year, the Stone Mountain Tennis Center facility closed due to a non-sustainable business model.
